As a single woman, I appreciate your consideration of our needs. I was always very frustrated in the workplace by the expectation that I work extra so parents can be available for kids things but heaven forbid I need to leave town for a wedding or dance recital for my siblings or nieces. If they’re not spouse or kids, it’s like my family doesn’t count.

Pregnancy and children are a wonderful invitation to solidarity among women across life stages, but I’ve also found that they can be stark and painful dividers. Perhaps because of what you mentioned to the effect of single people have fewer available friends for when they are in crisis. I may not be able to drop everything and bum around a park while listening to a friend’s existential concerns, but my dinner table is always open and the kids do eventually go to sleep for the night. I wish my single friends knew that they were still welcome even if they are not the premier priority bc kids take precedent.
