I obviously love hosting friends when they come to visit, but I've been especially grateful over the past couple of years to be able to open my home up to strangers. Since many of my friends in grad school are men, I've had the opportunity to host many of their sisters/girlfriends/fiancees (in one case, even, a friend's friend's fiancee and her sister!) when they come into town. I'm a shy and introverted person myself, so opening up my home to a stranger feels pretty vulnerable, but at the same time I have to remember that my guests are entering a total stranger's home too. I think it's neat when both host and guest can offer one another the gift of that vulnerability. Some of these strangers have become repeat guests, and eventually friends!

Bill Withers, lean on me is a good song, speaking of music, a song about dependency.
