The story of bereavement leave is the story of our obsession with the free market. Three (or, goodness me, five!) days of bereavement leave is a benefit you get if you're at a 'good' job, or have a union contract - so it's another thing to strive for as a privilege instead of having it granted as a right. Just like healthcare, or paid parental leave.
