The Eve Tushnet extract reminds me of GK Chesterton on the paradoxical nature of Christian virtues: "It is true that there is a thing crudely called charity, which means charity to the deserving poor; but charity to the deserving is not charity at all, but justice. It is the undeserving who require it, and the ideal either does not exist at all, or exists wholly for them."
This reminds me of this life changing Brene Brown podcast episode with the Nagoski sisters (https://open.spotify.com/episode/6L48OhNvYeIlv7Tir3yij0). Basically, we store emotions in our bodies, and need to complete the emotional or stress cycle in order to live healthfully. I've added both their books, Come As You Are (Emily) and Burnount (Emily & Amelia) to my reading list.
Interestingly, I think this movement through the cycle is *very* similar to the process of confession etc. Maybe they cover that in their book!
shame = Should Have Already Mastered Everything that's what shame is. laid on us because we should have already mastered whatever it is that's before us that we aren't doing properly. it causes self doubt and ultimately can result in self hatred. 12 step programs are full of people who have been shamed.

I highly recommend Come as You Are. Not a Catholic book, but there’s a lot of good in it that’s worth taking away from it.
